Customizing the Navigation data

The app is capable of displaying a great variety of navigation information, and many people will want to customize the displays to enhance the data that is relevant to their style of using the app. Some people just want to record their trip, and see the distance travelled, while others want to know, for example, velocity-made-good as they are navigating towards a mark.

To re-arrange the data items, tap the main Menu button (top-right) and select Data Layout, then Arrange. You can then drag or re-size data items with your finger. Items that you cover up when you re-position or re-size an item are automatically moved out of the way, and re-positioned if they will fit.

If you want to change any of the data fields, tap-and-hold the item on the Navigation Data screen, and select "Change Data" from the menu. Select the data item you want to display from a wide range of categories. (See Details). If the item you want to change is interactive (such as a button), you have to first enable the "Arrange" mode (main Menu, Data Layout). In arrange mode, the button is not active and taps are used to move or configure the item.

If you want to adjust the number of rows or columns of data items, you can do that under the Menu, Data Layout.

When you have finished customizing the layout, use Menu, Data Layout and select "Done arranging".

When you are happy with your customized layout, I recommend saving it to a file. Menu, Data Layout, then select Save Layout.

Note if you make changes after saving, they are stored in the currently active context, and are not automatically written to the file you saved. If you want to save changes to a file, you have to save it again.

If you make a mistake and want to go back to the default, select Restore Default Layout, or you can load one of your saved layouts. You could set up one layout optimized for hiking, and another set up for sailing, or whatever. These files have the *.dvtf extension, and these can be shared/emailed to other users (even your buddy with an iPhone or Mac) so you both have the same data layout. You can also set up button on the Data screen that are a shortcut to load a specific layout file (do a Change Data, then select Other > Load Layout).

If you connect the device to an external source of data using Bluetooth or WiFi, there is a whole range of marine instrumentation data (wind speed, water depth, etc, etc) that can be displayed. See External GPS data.
