General Settings

Change map scale by zooming. When you zoom the map and you zoom past the normal viewing scale for the current map, the app automatically changes to the next scale of map. Disable this checkbox if you prefer the app not to change maps no matter how far you zoom.  Note that it will only automatically change to a map if the type of map is expanded in the Map List. So for example, if you are viewing a topo map and want it to automatically change scale from 1:50,000 to 1:25,000 as you zoom in, but you don't want it to switch to historical maps, you can go to the Map List and just close the category for the Historical maps.

Disable Screen Timeout. Prevents the device from automatically turning off the screen. Useful for example when cycling, where you cannot spare a hand to use the device, but with the screen on the device will run down the battery quickly. Note the device will still dim the screen, requiring a quick tap to turn on the backlight again. (If you just want to record a tracklog, see GPS Settings, below).

Full Screen Mode. Display the map using the full area of the screen when you are not interacting with it. Tap the map to display the menu, home button, etc. On a larger screen device, you may prefer to disable this so that the menu is visible all the time.

Enable Notifications. Notifications are used to alert you for things like mark proximity or anchor alarms, AIS collision warnings. (These are Professional license features).

Use volume buttons for zoom, etc. Enables using the physical buttons on the device to control the map:

Scale Bar:  Show a scale at the bottom of the map screen. Indicates the distance represented by the length of the bar

Automatic Map Download: If you turn this off, the map does not automatically download on-the-fly as you scroll and zoom. You will instead see white squares on the screen. You can use this after you have use the bulk download methods, if you don't want the app to go online to download further areas of the map. However, if you are in an area of poor signal strength, it is better to put the device in "Airplane mode", which prevents all communication. The phone will use a lot of battery power searching for a signal.

GPS Settings

Velocity Vector: Draws an arrow on the map from the GPS icon, representing your speed and direction of travel.

Vector Scale: The length of the velocity vector arrow changes according to speed. The end of the arrow is where you would be after this amount of time (default 5 minutes).

Velocity averaging: This should be turned on if you have a GPS chipset that uses a speed threshold that designed for car navigation. These GPSs do not give speed information at walking speeds. This option estimates your speed and direction of travel from changes in the GPS position.

Record track while the app is backgrounded: If this option is enabled, the app will record a tracklog even if the device is put to sleep with the power button, or if you are using another app. For this to work, you have to have the system notification present that informs you that Memory-Map is recording. If you disable this notification then it does not record. Also many devices have manufacturer-specific "battery-saving" features that are designed to stop applications running in the background. Look in the settings under Battery or Power settings and disable "App power monitoring" or anything of that nature.

Color: You can change the color of the GPS icon and the velocity vector. This same color is the default used when you record a track.

Data Connection: Allows you to connect to an external GPS or NMEA instrumentation data using WiFi or Bluetooth. Compatible with most NMEA WiFi adaptors that use TCP or UDP, and standard bluetooth GPSs. A Professional license is requiredd. The "Built-in GPS" is just a different way of accessing the device's own hardware. You can use this if for some reason the system Location Service is not giving a suitable position.

NMEA Debug: (Not enabled when using the default location service) Saves the input data in a file called nmea_debug.txt in the Download/Memory-Map folder. You can email this file to us for support if necessary.

Units

Allows you to change the speed/distance units to Statute, Nautical or Metric

Position Format allows you to select from one of several mapping grid formats, or to select how to display minutes/seconds of latitude and longitude.

Bearings allows you to select from True or Magnetic north as the reference for compass bearings.

Help/About

Shows the version number of the app, and allows you to access the online help

Map Licenses

Sensor Settings

(Note: Sensor settings are accessed by the tap-and-hold context menu from a related item on the Nav data screen)

If your device has a compass or barometric pressure sensor, these can be enabled here. You can also set the altitude height adjustment for the barometric altitude readout. See Compass Heading, and the Sensors data panel items.

Start Timer Settings

(Note: These settings are also accessed by the tap-and-hold context menu from a related item on the Nav data screen)

The data panel can show a count-down / count-up timer. This settings dialog allows you to set the count-down period in minutes. Set it to zero if you just want a count-up stopwatch. You can also set the timer to count down to a specific time of day. Use the 24-hour system to set the hours, minutes and seconds.
