Using Online Maps

Tap the Map Folder icon on the toolbarto open the Map List. This initially displays a list of maps that are already installed on the device, and that cover the geographic location that you were looking at. If you are just getting started, there is probably just one free basemap in the list.

To download additional maps, tap the Digital Map Store button. This changes the list to show available maps, that cover the same geographic location as shown on the map screen.

If you wish to find maps covering another location, tap Maps Everywhere. You are prompted to enter a search, which can be a place name, such as a city or country, or it could be a keyword such as the name of a map publisher.

The app defaults to showing just Topo maps and Basemaps, but Digital Map Store contains many different types of specialist maps, for marine use, aviation, historical maps, street maps, etc. To access these additional types, click on the types that are of interest to open that section.

You can select My Online Maps to show a list of maps that you have purchased as well as free maps. If you have a Memory-Map account, you have to sign in before all your maps will appear in the map list. Tap then Map Licenses, Sign in.

Maps in the Map List dialog are shown with one of 4 icons:

  A free map

A map that needs to be activated. (Note that if you have purchased a map, it is still locked until you activate it on this device).

A map that has been activated on this device

A map installed with a temporary license (eg, a preview)

Some older maps require you to activate a "Classic Map" compatibility license, and maps imported from third party files require an "Import Map" license. Demo periods for both of these are available.

If you open a map from the Digital Map Store, there is the option to purchase map, and this can be done using any web browser. Click the "Buy" button to view a list of packages that contain the map you are using. The button on the right allows secure online purchase in the browser. When you complete the online purchase, the resources are added to your account and are immediately available for activation in Memory-Map. You don't have to enter any serial numbers.

Some maps are licensed by the square kilometer, and instead of having to buy the whole map, you can purchase just as much as you need. In this case, an "Activate" button is shown on the map. When this is pressed, the application will show you how many square km are in your account and how many are needed to activate the region of the screen. Clicking Activate will unlock the map data for the region shown on the screen.

If you don't activate the map, it is displayed with a blurry, grayed-out appearance. This allows you to see major features, even though the map is disabled.

More information about license management is available here.
