The main user interface of the application is the Map Display window, which lets you view the digital map with overlay data such as marks, routes and tracks.
You can view multiple map windows within the frame of the application, showing a different view of the same map, or different maps. To open a map in a new window, set the "Open in new window" checkbox in the Map List dialog.
Each window has the standard controls to maximize, minimize and close. In addition, the Window menu allows you to select the window you want to view, and to tile or cascade all windows.
Be careful not to open too many windows. Your system will start to run out of memory, and give dramatically slower performance. Four or five windows is fine, ten is probably too many. For example, when you use the Find Place menu command, a new window can be created.
The following pages in the Getting Started guide cover most of the details of using the Map Display:
The following menu commands are available by right-clicking on the map, away from any overlay objects:
Zoom in: (+ or = key) Display the map at a larger scale so you can read more of the detail
Zoom out: (- key) Display the map at a smaller scale so you can see a larger area.
Same scale: Open an adjoining map that covers the location of the cursor (outside the boundary of the current map) at the nearest scale to the current map. As an extra convenience, simply double-clicking outside the boundary of the current map will open the adjoining map.
In to Larger scale: Open a map that covers the location of the cursor at a larger scale (more detail) than the current map.
Out to Smaller scale: Open a map that covers the location of the cursor at a smaller scale (wider area) than the current map.
Maps at cursor: Opens a pop-up menu that lists all maps at the cursor location. The Map List at Cursor opens the Map List dialog, allowing you to see more details about the maps.
Merge Map: The map you select from the pop-up menu is merged with the current map, to form a larger seamless map. Click here for more info.
